Lessons from the End of the World

by Grantonio on May 24, 2011

So, after the end of the world, rapture day, we are all still here.

Either we are ALL full of sin, or someone is full of, well, it.

What is interesting is that one of the first recognized cases of cognitive dissonance was in the late 1800′s surrounding another end-of-the-world prophecy.

In that early case, the doomsday prophet fell into a deep depression when the world did not end. He so deeply believed that the Lord was coming that when there was no divine deadline, the prophet could not cope with the dissonance.

He had to wrestle for a very long time with the fact that, well, he was wrong.

I wonder if our modern prophet had the same reaction; if he believed it in his core that much.

Regardless, I am certainly thankful that he gave me the opportunity to find some valuable take-aways from the end of the world.

Take Aways from the End of the World:

1. It was a great opportunity to check my sense of belief in the impossible.

Whether or not you agreed with this guy, he actually believed in something. Everyone I met found comfort in ridiculling him. However, I caught myself thinking, ‘What if this just happens to be the one guy who was right? What side of believing in the impossible did I find myself?’

This is important insofar as we are all constant believers in the impossible, encouraging and lifting each other up. Some stuff is kooky. Well, actually, there is a lot of kooky stuff out there, but we should never let that make us only trust the possible.

We just may wake up thinking that our own dreams are impossible.

Lessons from the End of the World to be continued…
